dimitrigrimm asked:

Hi =3 I love your work and I actually just realized you've drawn a lot of the characters I grew up watching when I was a kid! I love drawing cartoons and different characters and I've even tried coming up with my own drawing style, but every time I try I wind up over thinking it and my designs just look off. Is there any advice you can give for over thinking like that?

chrisbattleart answered:

No artist ever starts out automatically having their own style— It’s something that develops gradually over several years of doing art (By a combination of learning basics, imitating your favorites, free artistic exploration, and sometimes professional work that may or may not be outside your personal wheelhouse).  As years pass, your “style” will re-define itself several times; How you draw at 23 will be much different from your drawings at 43.

I say just DRAW— Learn, explore, enjoy.  Eventually you’ll look up and realize you’ve got a style that’s the sum of your experiences.

… and then you’ll decide to explore an entirely new style just for kicks ;)

wow great message chris :)

Last night’s episode, Ssh!, was dedicated to Armen Mirzaian, a storyboard artist who worked on Adventure Time as well as on CatDog, Transformers, and other animated series.  On Adventure Time, he storyboarded “What is Life” and “Business Time,” and helped write “The Jiggler.”  He was killed in a car crash in February at the age of 35.
rabalogy posits that last night’s episode was a “moment of silence” for Armen.  If that’s true, that’s lovely.

best artist around ;)
